The World Indigenous Cancer Conference 2024, was proudly hosted by the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Alliance (VCCC) in partnership with the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The VCCC Alliance is a powerful partnership of 10 leading research, academic and clinical institutions, working together to fundamentally reshape the way it tackles cancer. Through strategic, structured collaboration it drives change at a system level. Its innovative, integrated approach helps accelerate the translation of cutting-edge scientific evidence into better outcomes for people affected by cancer.
The 2024 Conference presented an outstanding opportunity to bring key Indigenous cancer researchers, clinicians, advocates and community to Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. The conference identified international research priorities, fostered new collaboration, enhanced capacity and shared knowledge and information about Indigenous people living with cancer on a global scale.
The program encompassed topics aligning with the conference theme of Process. Progress. Power. Attendees heard from speakers addressing both challenges and progress across the cancer continuum, from prevention and screening to survivorship and palliative care.
The aim of this conference was to reduce disparities in Indigenous cancer. One way we can achieve this is to build on the momentum, discussions, and collaborations from the first two World Indigenous Cancer Conferences held in Australia (2016) and Canada (2019).
The 2024 Conference brought together the people advancing and driving substantive developments in cancer services and research from across the globe.
Throughout the program, participants created discussion aligning with the themes:
PROCESS: Systematic activities and actions taken to achieve the aspirations and goals of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in cancer care and control.
PROGRESS: Growth and advancement in cancer care and control for Indigenous and Tribal Peoples.
POWER: Existing power differentials and the role of self-determination in ensuring mechanisms of voice to support the needs and aspirations of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in cancer care and control.
Plenary speakers
A range of international and national speakers were included to ensure a rich and dynamic program.
Success
Researchers, public health practitioners, clinicians, nurses, allied health professionals, related professionals, and Indigenous community members and groups had the opportunity to discuss, debate and direct the key issues impacting cancer disparities for Indigenous peoples across the globe.
